Cultivating Our Garden (Villanelle)

But you and I are separate in this white

See but the light that glints off sugar spilling out

I surround you with my love

Glass sparrows we, chase our fall in flight

A swirl of milk in morning tea, a cloud,

But you and I are separate in this white

I thought that I could math you, sketch the bright

Circumference of paper where with morning ink, too proud,

I surround you with my love

You are a shining glob of butter, bread through rooftops, light

Refracted in your feathers, sunny side turned inside out

But you and I are separate in this white

I know, I know, I know - you lied:

The dreams I built around you were a tower, far too loud,

I surround you with my love

I cannot be you, cannot touch you, night

I dusk, I dawn, I buy you orange juice and doubt

But you and I are separate in this white

I surround you with my love
